As it is, most of humanity sees itself to be of paramount value, even drawing wisdom from religious teachings, of going forth and multiplying, and becoming stewards of the earth as we fill and subdue it. For the longest time, human survival has become centric to the ideal view of the world.

Unfortunately, this has also become a reason for us to reach a point wherein we are faced with a really huge population, without an increase in the availability of resources, shares West Seegmiller. In a sense, we may have forgotten about the stewardship part of the wisdom that we subscribe to.

Our numbers were less than 4 billion in 1970, and today, we are almost at the 8 billion mark. If we were able to do that in the past 50 years, it’s not hard to imagine how much we will grow in the next 50 years. The truth is, if we keep growing at this rate, we will inevitably use up the resources that are available to us.

Today, it makes sense why people are growing hungry. It also makes sense that trees are cut down faster than they are grown, adds West Seegmiller. It makes sense because people have a lack of consciousness.

Nonprofits all over the world have come to an awareness of this issue that’s waiting to fall on our heads in the next few years. This is why they are committed to making even more people aware, for them to take action. If we truly believe in the value of stewardship, we had better take a page from the nonprofit story.
